What if You Don’t Know How To Do Better?

There is this concept that “when you know better you do better.”

BUT what about those that do not know? In Chicago, there are these food deserts where there are no grocery stores for miles.food desers

Most of the food deserts are located on the South and West Sides of Chicago. These areas are predominately black and Hispanic. In these areas, people eat foods that have zero to very little nutritional value.

In addition to this, there is a culture that supports unhealthy living and does not support healthy living. This is a deep rooted issue. Here are some of the issues that the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) has discovered.

According to REACH,

  • Blacks are 40% more likely than whites to have high blood pressure and are when they discover that they have high blood pressure, they are less likely to get it under control.
  • Diagnosed diabetes is 77% higher among blacks, 66% higher among Hispanics, and 18% higher among Asians than whites.
  • Native Americans are 60% more likely to be obese than whites.
  • Life expectancy for non-Hispanic blacks is 75.1 years, compared to 78.9 years for non-Hispanic whites (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion)

The work at PATIENTcE is primarily related to education and support for behavioral changes.

  • We provide tools to help gentlyremove old behaviors based on methods that have been proven to work.
  • We provide tools to gently add beneficial behaviors and attitudes that have been proven to help increase happiness and quality of life.
  • We provide tools to help implement and organize a new and healthy lifestyle (Patient-Ce.com)

The ultimate goal is to reach individuals that need help and also communities that need this education the most as well as, to, one person at a time, one neighborhood at a time, implement sustainable resources so that individuals and communities can function on their own.
